The Black American Cookout
Authored by: Darrell Davis
I did not know how important being invited to the black cookout is to White People.
If that's how they feel about a regular black cookout White People should experience a Miami black cookout.
What's the difference between a regular black cookout versus a Miami black cookout?
Well...
Being that I'm Black; born and raised in Miami ... Let me tell you.
A black Miami cookout is exactly like a regular black cookout because Florida is part of the South. So you have that southern black cooking.
But, in Miami, there are additions. We have Black People from all over the Caribbean. So... Along with the southern black chicken cooking, you also have jerk chicken. HOMEMADE Jamaican ginger beer (No store bought Jamaican ginger beer soda).
- Bacardi Rum
- Barbancourt Rum
- Along with other alcoholic drinks
- Various foods of the Caribbean
- Spades and dominoes (That's a given)
Be surprised that at certain Miami Black cookout parties a junkanoo will happen. If you are White and you, just so happen to be invited to a Black cookout. Get to know certain music.
- Gap Band
- Slave
- Frankie Beverly and Maze
- Con Funk Shun
- Cameo
- Parliament Funkadelics / George Clinton
- Stylistics
- Renee and Angela
- SOS Band
- Mass Production
Just for starters.
And please, please, please, please, please, please, don't try acting black. Just be cool and chill (relax).
- DO NOT BRING ANY OF YOUR (WHITE) FOOD! PLEASE, DEAR GOD, DON'T DO THAT!
- And lastly...
If you see any Black People – especially Black Women – dressed in African attire with a whole bunch of beads around their neck ... Most likely they're into Santeria / Yoruba. Do not freak the hell out or become so fascinated that you start going over to them wanting to touch their beads and ask a whole bunch of questions.
Please, please don't do that. You will be insulting Black Culture as a whole.
Thank you,
Darrell Davis
