Deeply Divided
Authored by: Leah Del Carlo
Everything has felt so heavy lately with the realization of how incredibly divided we are. When I find myself in disbelief and just can’t understand how people say things or feel something so terrible, I find myself thinking…What a blessing to not understand. What a blessing that my brain doesn’t think like that or my heart doesn’t feel like that.
Some people might think I need to be careful about what I post online. But, here’s the thing. I want it to be very clearly documented that as our democracy erodes, I was never and will never be ok with this. I want it to be crystal clear to my grandchildren that I’m on the right side of history. Because this is going to be a doozy for the history books.
I mostly keep quiet when I hear people say, “I just can’t. I just can’t take it. I can only take a little bit of it. I just can’t watch the news. It’s too much.” But here’s the thing. If you say that or think that, you only have that luxury because you’re (most likely) straight and white. You get to take a break from the horror when others can not. And, “I don't do politics" is white person speak for “I have the privilege of ignoring injustice when it doesn't impact me personally."
Please know that the people on your timeline right now who are being the loudest are not radicalized, extreme, or hate America. What they are, are empathetic human beings who want basic rights for everyone. So if you don’t want those things, maybe it’s time to look inward and ask yourself why. Or maybe you do and you’re putting your support in the wrong place.
