Purple Rain by Prince
Authored by: Jay Archambeau
I found myself wondering if Purple Rain could be interpreted another way.
Not rain as in precipitation.
Reign.
A Purple Reign.
I know that's not how Prince explained the song, and I'm not suggesting it's the “correct” interpretation. But it's an interesting thought experiment.
Purple has long been associated with royalty, power, and authority. So hearing the title as “Purple Reign” changes the feel of the song for me. Instead of thinking about something falling from the sky, I start thinking about the arrival of something new.
When I listen to lyrics like, “It's time we all reach out for something new, ” it feels less like a romantic statement and more like an invitation to change. A turning point. A transition.
Looking at the film through that lens is interesting, too. Much of the story centers on people struggling with pain, insecurity, family history, and relationships. By the end, there is at least a sense that some of those cycles might finally be breaking.
Maybe that's why the idea of a “Purple Reign” resonates with me. Not as a political reign or some grand declaration, but as the beginning of a different way of being.
Then again, maybe it's just a clever play on words that I've spent far too much time thinking about.
Either way, I'll probably never hear the title quite the same way again.
