Brand Governance Case Study
PharmaNutrients Brand Standards
A self-initiated graphic standards guide created to help PharmaNutrients establish brand consistency across packaging, advertising, stationery, signage, web standards, sales materials, and external agency work.
Project Highlights
Overview
During 1996 and 1997, PharmaNutrients was experiencing rapid growth within the nutraceutical industry. Products such as Absoritol, Fat Binder, Tonalin, and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) were helping establish the company as an emerging leader in the category.
As marketing efforts expanded, the need for a consistent brand presence became increasingly important.
At the time, no formal brand standards existed. Marketing materials, advertising, sales collateral, packaging, and emerging web content were often developed without a centralized reference, creating the potential for inconsistency across customer touchpoints.
The Challenge
The challenge was not creating a single campaign or one-off design piece. The challenge was creating organizational consistency.
As the company grew, more stakeholders became involved in the creation of marketing materials. Sales teams, marketing staff, external agencies, printers, and design firms all required guidance on how the PharmaNutrients brand should be represented.
Without documented standards, each new project risked introducing visual inconsistencies that could weaken the company’s professional image and market positioning.
The greatest challenge was adoption. Creating the standards was straightforward. Encouraging teams and external vendors to consistently use them required ongoing communication and reinforcement.
The Solution
As Art Director and Webmaster, I identified the need for a unified standards guide that could serve as a single source of truth for both internal teams and external partners.
I developed a comprehensive graphic standards guide that documented the visual foundation of the PharmaNutrients brand.
The goal was to provide practical, real-world examples that could be easily referenced by internal teams and external agencies alike.
What The Guide Included
The standards guide documented the visual and production rules needed to create consistent brand materials.
- Logo usage standards
- Typography specifications
- Color palettes
- Label and packaging standards
- Print advertising examples
- Business card standards
- Letterhead and envelope specifications
- Signage examples
- Website standards and usage guidelines
Who Used It
The standards guide became a shared reference used by corporate staff, marketing teams, sales teams, advertising agencies, design firms, print vendors, and external marketing partners.
By creating a common language around the brand, the guide helped ensure that materials produced by different teams still felt like they belonged to the same organization.
Why It Mattered
PharmaNutrients was rapidly establishing itself as a leader in the nutraceutical space at a time when Absoritol, Fat Binder, Tonalin, and CLA were gaining traction.
In that context, brand consistency was more than an aesthetic concern. It supported credibility, market positioning, sales confidence, and the company’s ability to present itself as a mature and reliable organization.
Outcome
The standards guide became an important operational resource as PharmaNutrients continued to grow.
It was particularly valuable for third-party marketing firms, advertising agencies, and design partners who needed a reliable reference when creating new materials.
The guide improved consistency, reduced ambiguity, and helped present PharmaNutrients as a more established organization within a rapidly growing industry.
Reflection
Looking back, this project reinforced an important lesson: consistency cannot rely solely on memory or individual interpretation.
As organizations grow, they need documentation, governance, and shared ownership. This project represents one of my earliest experiences creating systems that enabled others to produce better, more consistent work.
Brand standards are not restrictions. They are tools that help teams protect clarity, credibility, and consistency at scale.
